What is meant by the term "learning style"? Your learning style is basically the best way for you to learn, or the style in which you prefer to be taught.
Why is knowing your learning style important? With education comes self-education. Of course the public education system provides us with educators, but often they stick to one teaching style that may not always correlate with our unique learning styles. It is imperative that we, as students, take the information that is given to us and make it digestible for ourselves to study. Thus, we must become aware of our learning styles so we are able to teach ourselves.

The most commonly known learning styles are based on three of the five senses: visual, auditory, kinesthetic. Learn by seeing, learn by hearing, or learn by doing. However, there are so many more learning styles to explore.

Visual learners
~ learn best by sight or observation
~ pictures, charts, graphs, whiteboards
~ easily visualize information
~ may like to draw/sketch

Auditory learners
~ learn by hearing; learn by verbal presentations or speeches
~ strong with sound, music, rhythm; familiarity with instruments
~ usually include singers or musicians
~ good listeners

Kinesthetic or physical learners
~ learn by doing
~ physical activity or sports
~ also called "hands-on" learners

Reading & writing learners
~ learn best by reading and writing information
~ NOT the same as a visual learner
~ learn through words (not pictures)
~ enjoy reading and taking notes

Verbal or linguistic learners
~ learn through words in speech & writing
~ articulate; can easily express themselves
~ extensive vocabularies
~ strong in speech, debating, and journalism

Logical learners
~ learn through logic, reasoning, and numbers
~ can solve complex problems
~ usually strong in math, science, & computer programming

Social or interpersonal learners
~ learn in group settings
~ prefer to work with others
~ enjoy social settings
~ good communicators & good listeners

Solitary or intrapersonal learners
~ learn best by themselves
~ prefer self-study and working alone
~ independent and self-aware
How do you determine your learning style? If you can't determine your learning style just by looking at a list, there are always learning style quizzes online. Much like aptitude tests, learning style quizzes evaluate your strengths and study methods to determine your learning language. Note that you may not fit exactly into one category and you can definitely have mixed results!
